Dr. Mohamed bin Mubarak Bin Dainah, the Minister of Oil and Environment and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, participated in the high-level session held on the sidelines of the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC), in Baku.

In his remarks, Bin Dainah emphasised that climate change poses a global challenge requiring collective international efforts. He called the development countries to take the lead in climate action.

Dr. Bin Dainah highlighted the importance of providing enabling resources, including sustainable financing, the transfer of modern technology and capacity building to support the developing countries in achieving their climate goals and ensuring comprehensive progress in addressing this critical challenge.

He underscored Bahrain’s commitment for its pledge under Paris Agreement on climate change, underscoring the Kingdom’s readiness to share the experience and knowledge in this field to enhance international cooperation and achieve common climate objectives.

The minister noted that although Bahrain’s contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions is less than 0.1%, the country has significance and ambitious steps to reduce emissions causing global warming and to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

He said that Bahrain has adopted a sense of pioneering national initiative and programs aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions causing global warming to 30% by 2035 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, all within the framework of the national energy strategy, emphasising that these efforts reflect Bahrain’s commitment to its global responsibility and enhance its leadership role in transitioning to a more sustainable economy.

The minister noted that Bahrain has adopted a comprehensive plan in this area, launching a range of national initiatives based on nature-based solutions.

These include increasing afforestation efforts and quadrupling the number of mangrove trees, alongside implementing the national investment plan for climate adoption, which aims to enhance environmental infrastructure and achieve long-term sustainability, he added.
